The Muddled Pig Gastropub now open in Maplewood

Michelle Allender and Austin Hamblin, owners of the new Muddled Pig Gastropub in Maplewood, wanted something good to eat. The two chefs were working together at Bella Vino Wine Bar & Tapas in St. Charles when they came to this realization.

“We were sitting around, kind of thinking about where we would want to go when we got off of work for a beer and something good to eat, and it kind of just went from there,” Allender said. “We were talking about things, and eventually we realized that we were actually planning a restaurant.”

That restaurant opened last week at 2733 Sutton Boulevard, in the space that was previously the Wood. The menu features foie gras (paired with rosemary waffles and topping the Muddled Burger, a patty of ground short ribs, brisket and chuck), fried chicken and pork. A lot of pork. Pork steak, pork shank, pork chops.

“Even though it is very pork-heavy, it’s also very fun,” Allender said. “It has St. Louis traditional items -- like we’ve got a pork Steak -- but then we also have a soy-whiskey-glazed pork belly banh mi, so we bring a little bit of the Asian flair in there. We like to play.”

Allender and Hamblin, who both graduated from the culinary arts program at St. Louis Community College-Forest Park, are excited to join Maplewood's booming food scene.

“It’s a very eclectic area,” Allender said, “There’s just a lot of foot traffic and people are just so friendly down here and you will meet people from all walks of life which we absolutely love because we feel our food is very eclectic.”

The bar program is centered around whiskey.

“We are very big whiskey, scotch and bourbon type of drinkers,” Allender said. “It’s our favorite thing, along with beer, and so we just kind of put it together.”

The Muddled Pig is open from 11 a.m.-midnight Tuesday through Thursday, 11 a.m.-1 a.m. Friday and Saturday, and 3 p.m.-midnight Sunday. The phone number is 314-781-4607.
